Margaret Sutherland Festival with Flinders Quartet

In the lead up to Flinders Quartet’s Digital Concert premiere next week, here’s a performance from last year that I filmed for FQ Digital to whet your appetite.

This concert included all works by Australian composer Margaret Sutherland, and was filmed at the heritage-listed Villa Alba Museum.

Margaret Sutherland was an Australian composer born in Adelaide in 1897. She composed around 90 works in her lifetime, and was noted for her rebellious and philanthropic spirit. Sutherland championed Australian music and even played a huge role in the creation of the Arts Centre of Melbourne.

If you’re interested in learning more about this fascinating woman, there’s a biography on Sutherland written by Jillian Graham called Inner Song that was recently published.

Filmed at Villa Alba Museum, 27 March 2022

Filming + editing: Agatha Yim, Polyphonic Pictures

Engineering, editing and mastering: Thomas Grubb, Mano Musica
